Quality Point Deficit
Quality Point Deficit, or QPD, is an absolute measure of what is necessary to bring a student’s cumulative GPA required up to be in good academic standing with the institution. The minimum GPA to be considered in good academic standing as an undergraduate student at Keuka College is 2.0. Students in undergraduate programs with higher GPA thresholds and graduate programs should view their program’s handbook and consult with their advisor. Grades of P/F, S/U, IN, and W are not included in a QPD calculation. The formula for calculating the quality point deficit is the following: Quality Point Deficit = (Cumulative GPA Hours Attempted x 2.0) – Cumulative Quality Points.
Students who have a quality point deficit which puts them at risk of not returning to good academic standing should discuss their situation with their academic advisor. Generally, students who want to improve their quality point deficit quickly should retake courses that they have previously failed to receive a better grade. If there is a course that the student needs to repeat but the course is not being offered at Keuka College within the timeframe needed, there are opportunities for students to use Acadeum, a course-sharing consortium. Through Acadeum, the course is transcripted as Keuka College credit and will replace the quality points in the cumulative GPA. Quality point deficit is used in Keuka College's Academic Review processes. Students who are not in good academic standing are at risk of losing financial aid eligibility. Students who have high quality point deficits should consult with their academic advisor, the Registrar's Office, and/or the Provost's Office to make a plan to return to good academic standing.
Quality Point Ranges and What They Mean:
Quality Point Deficit of less than 12:
It is mathematically possible for a student to return to good academic standing if the student has a good semester. A “good” semester generally refers to grades of ‘B’ or better in all coursework. Course repeats are weighted higher in terms of boosting a student’s GPA and as such are strongly encouraged. Students who have low grades in their major requirements should consult with their academic advisor.
Quality Point Deficit of 12 - 24:
Significant changes to academic performance are needed to recover from this quality point deficit range. Students will likely need at least two good semesters to return to good academic standing. A “good” semester generally refers to grades of ‘B’ or better in all coursework. Course repeats are weighted higher in terms of boosting a student’s GPA and as such are strongly encouraged. Students who have low grades in their major requirements should consult with their academic advisor.
Quality Point Deficit of 25+:
Students in this range are likely to be dismissed. Returning to good academic standing will likely take at least three semesters of coursework at Keuka College. A “good” semester generally refers to grades of ‘B’ or better in all coursework. Course repeats are weighted higher in terms of boosting a student’s GPA and as such are strongly encouraged. Students with a quality point deficit of 25 or higher are strongly encouraged to consult with their academic advisor or Provost’s Office to review ways to fulfill their academic goals.
