Facilities Policies

Heating & Cooling Policy

  • Overall Space Temperature Summary
    • Heating season to be maintained between 68-72 degrees. The heating season is from the middle of October through April or May. This may fluctuate depending on the weather.
    • Cooling season to be maintained between 72-76 degrees in buildings with A/C capabilities. The cooling season is from May through the end of September. This may fluctuate depending on the weather.
    • Please expect temperatures to vary slightly throughout the room given proximity to windows, doors, and exterior walls.
    • The Offices of Campus Safety, Facilities, and Residence Life, along with Finger Lakes Premier Properties (FLPP), reserve the right to enter any room or apartment to:
      • Adjust the heating and cooling system
      • Close any open windows
      • Perform maintenance on the heating and cooling system
    • The above offices will attempt to connect with residents prior to entry via College email to correct any concerns or issues.
  • Ball Hall
    • Students have no control over the temperature set point in their room.
    • The temperature sensor is near the window and floor.
    • Beds/desks/dressers and other items will affect the temperature sensor function when blocking it, so please avoid placing them in that area.
    • Beds/desks/dressers and other items blocking the heating units will affect temperature in the room.
    • Open windows will also affect the temperature sensor function.
    • Some units will continue to blow ambient temperature air which may seem warm or cold. This will continue even if the temperature set point is reached.
    • Shutting off these units will significantly impact the temperature of the room.
  • Blyley, Davis. Saunders & Space Halls
    • Buildings are run by a main boiler that regulates the whole building heating supply.
    • Buildings could be divided up by zones or floors, but the same temperature heating will be distributed through the whole building.
    • Beds/desks/dressers and other items blocking the wall registers will affect temperature in the room and could cause a fire.
    • Opening windows will affect the temperature of the room.
    • Wall registers that are shut/open will affect heat being released into the room.
    • These buildings have fin tube radiation and do not blow air.
    • There are known rooms that may be colder due to a variety of reasons (i.e.: North or West location in building, block walls, older windows, etc.).
  • Harrington Hall
    • Students have minimal control over the temperature set point.
    • A thermostat is placed on an inside wall in one of the rooms.
    • In rooms sharing a bathroom, this thermostat will only be in one room.
    • When the thermostat is in one room, please be mindful of thermostat function as it will affect the adjoining room and those residents as well.
    • Beds/desks/dressers and other items will affect the thermostat function when blocking it.
    • Beds/desks/dressers and other items blocking the wall registers will affect the temperature of the room.
    • Open windows will also affect the function of the thermostat.
    • Lamps/computers/etc. and any other electrical devices near the thermostat could affect function of the thermostat.
    • Some units will continue to blow ambient temperature air which may seem warm or cold. This will continue even if the temperature set point is reached.
    • Shutting off these units will significantly impact the temperature of the room.
  • Keuka Park Apartments
    • Each apartment has its own thermostat and is controlled by the residents of that space.
    • Beds/desks/dressers and other items will affect the thermostat function when blocking it.
    • Lamps/computers/etc. and any other electrical devices near the thermostat could also affect the function of the thermostat.
    • Beds/desks/dressers and other items (curtains) blocking the heating units will affect temperature in the room and could cause a fire.
    • Opening windows will affect the temperature of the apartment and applicable room(s).
  • Strong Apartments
    • Each apartment has its own thermostat and is controlled by the residents of that space.
    • Beds/desks/dressers and other items will affect the thermostat function when blocking it.
    • Lamps/computers/etc. and any other electrical devices near the thermostat could also affect the function of the thermostat.
    • Beds/desks/dressers and other items (curtains) blocking the heating units will affect temperature in the room and could cause a fire.
    • Opening windows will affect the temperature of the apartment and applicable room(s).

Key Policy

  • If a key is broken or damaged, a replacement key may be ordered through the Office of Residence Life or the Office of Student Life in Dahlstrom Student Center. A $75 charge will be billed to the student’s account.
  • If a key is lost, a lock change and the appropriate new keys will be ordered through the Office of Residence Life or the Office of Student Life in Dahlstrom Student Center. A $250 charge will be billed to the student’s account. If you find your key, the $250 charge will be removed or credited back to your account.
