International Studies

International Studies prepares students with skills to succeed in a fast-paced, globalized workplace, in a variety of fields. Students will learn about how nations interact and the problems that affect the world as a single unit. They have the freedom to personalize their studies by following one of three possible tracks based on their preferred academic and career focus: Global Affairs and Public Policy, Global Cultures, and Global Business and Economy. Courses examine past and current international issues, theories, and policies bearing on conflict, cooperation, commerce, and cultures. In addition, students develop skills in writing, communication and policy analysis. Through experiential learning and foreign language study, they will explore and deepen their understanding of international institutions and cultures, as well as the diversity and pluralism of the United States itself. Students can apply classroom learning in real-world contexts such as semester-long and short-term study abroad programs, online classroom exchanges with campuses in China and Vietnam, Field Period® experiences, a senior capstone course, and an international studies colloquium. The International Studies program prepares students to enter careers in government, the foreign diplomatic service, intelligence agencies, international business, journalism, international law, private consulting firms, think tanks, or international service organizations. Critical thinking, writing, presentation and research skills will be vital to any chosen career path. This major is also excellent preparation for graduate school in more specialized areas. Through International Studies, the world will be opened to students.

Students graduating with a degree in International Studies will meet the following program learning outcomes:

1. Students will acquire and demonstrate an interdisciplinary knowledge base for careers in International Studies (to include Political Science, Social Sciences, Narrative Studies, Communication Studies).
2. Students will demonstrate competency in intercultural communication.
3. Students will demonstrate competency in the analysis of politics, history, and economics.
4. Students will acquire the skills, knowledge and values to work and contribute in the challenging International Studies environment through experiential learning.
5. Students will develop a personalized learning path through a combination of core courses, tracks and electives, which will allow them to prepare for graduate school or professional life in a range of fields related to International Studies.
