HIS-365 The U.S. Civil War and Reconstruction

This course will examine the causes, fighting, and outcomes of the U.S. Civil War and Reconstruction. Combining lectures, readings, primary source analysis ,films, and discussion, the course will address such questions as why the war came, why the United States won (or the Confederacy lost), and how the war affected various elements of American society. Although this is not a course on Civil War battles and generals, a significant portion of the class will be devoted to military affairs.  There will be a special effort to tie events on the battlefield to life behind the lines in both the North and the Confederacy.
