HIS-355 Colonialism in the Americas

This course examines the history of European colonization in the Americas, with special emphasis placed on the English experience in North America and Spanish endeavors in the North American "borderlands."  Particular attention will be paid to the interplay between Europeans, Indians, and Africans that constructed a "New World" in the Americas.  The central question of the course will be, "What was colonial about colonial America?"  We will investigate how and why colonialism matters in the early history of the Americas and focus on American colonialism's long-term implications.
