Academic Advising

All incoming students are assigned to a faculty academic advisor in their major at the discretion of the Division Chair. Students will have a designated faculty academic advisor throughout their time at Keuka College, determined by their program of study. Exploratory students are assigned a faculty advisor who will work closely with them in choosing a major through course exploration, and meetings with program faculty and career development staff. Once they select a major and meet entry requirements (as applicable), they will be assigned a faculty advisor in that program.

Faculty academic advisors help students meet academic program requirements and graduate on time. Academic advisors help students become independent, responsible learners who are familiar with institutional policies and cultural norms; possess problem solving skills; and know how to access a variety of academic, career planning, and support services. They also help students develop an educational plan consistent with their abilities, interests, and life goals.

Faculty academic advisors assist students with many aspects of navigating the college experience, including creating or modifying their course schedule, planning a Field Period®, and exploring career paths. They provide specific information about the requirements needed to graduate on time and work closely with students to meet those requirements. 

First-year advising cohorts are kept small to ensure that first-year students receive strong support and guidance during a significant transitional period. Additional advising support is provided for select students through the HEOP and Momentum Advising programs.

The mission of academic advising at Keuka College is to promote the success of students as independent learners through building meaningful relationships in an inclusive and supportive learning environment where students are empowered to develop and complete a purposeful educational plan consistent with their abilities, career, and life goals.

Goals of Academic Advising

• Facilitate navigation of registration processes and institutional policies, and use of academic and student support resources
• Guide students as they explore options, clarify their values, and make appropriate decisions regarding their educational, career, and life goals
• Support students in their development of an appropriate educational plan for timely graduation consistent with their demonstrated academic abilities, interests, and life goals
• Provide accurate and timely information about academic programs (majors, minors/areas of concentration, and general education), policies, and procedures, degree and institutional requirements, and leadership opportunities
• Assist students in understanding the nature, purpose, and coherence of their overall educational plan
• Mentor students as they plan and develop significant Field Period® experiences
• Help students become independent, responsible learners and problem-solvers who understand their abilities and potential and recognize the impact of their choices on achieving their personal and professional goals
