College Record 2019-2020

Interdisciplinary Studies

Student Initiated Majors are interdisciplinary majors designed by the student, in conjunction with a faculty committee, that reflect his/her own educational objectives and career interest. The candidate must prepare a proposal for the SIM in coordination with the SIM committee, which must then be approved by the Curriculum Committee.

All student candidates wishing to complete a SIM must

  • Determine a program of study, approved by the SIM Committee and Curriculum Committee, that contains a minimum of 30 hours of course work, of which at least 1/3 are at the 300 and 400 level.
  • Earn a GPA of at least 2.000. If the GPA at the time of SIM application is less than 2.000, the student must repeat coursework to obtain a GPA of 2.000 before formal acceptance of the SIM by the Curriculum Committee.
  • Determine whether the SIM will culminate in a BS or a BA degree.
  • Comply with all College graduation requirements regarding general education, liberal arts credits, and Field Periods.
  • Prepare a SIM proposal that will be evaluated and approved by the SIM Committee and the Curriculum Committee. A SIM should be a coherent plan of study that shows progression, depth, and breadth. It must describe the student's educational and career objectives, as well as how the selected coursework and disciplines are integrated to generate a cohesive program that meets these objectives.

Students wishing to pursue a SIM must work with the academic advisor to engage with the Curriculum Committee.  The Curriculum Committee will provide the prospective student with the requirements and processes for the SIM proposal and completion.
