POL-495 ST Advanced Topics in Political Science

An advanced study of a specific topic within political science. Intended for juniors and seniors, or for students with an appropriate background in political science. The student may repeat the course, but not the topic. Advanced Topics Course: This course explores the depiction of law and politics in film and other forms of media, with the goal of determining how accurately popular culture portrays the legal and political process. In particular, the course will focus on themes related to power, politicdal representation, ethics, transparency, and the characterization of public officials. Althouh an emphasis will be placed on American law and politics, issues such as the status of the U.S. abroad and its role in international conflicts will also be discussed. The majority of class time will be devoted to analysis and discussion, so students will be expected to view multiple full-length films outside of class and a Netflix subscription will be required. Advanced Topics Course (see course description below) This course explores the politics, history, and culture of 1960s and the era's influence on contemporary issues and institutions through the study of relevant scholarly literature, music and film. In particular, the course will focus on themes related to power, political representation, race and class, and war.Although an emphasis will be placed on American law and politics during this time period, issues such as the status of the U.S. abroad and its role in international conflicts will also be discussed.
