Transfer Credit Evaluation Process and Policies

Undergraduate Transfer Policies and Procedures

Undergraduate students who have completed course work from a non-Keuka College regionally accredited post-secondary U.S. institutions can be considered for transfer credit as follows:

•A maximum of 90 transfer credits can be transferred if accepted,

• of which a total of 18 credits can be from Credit by Examination and military American Council on Education's Office (ACE) credit, when the content is considered appropriate as transfer credit.

• Credit is accepted for those courses that are completed with a grade of C or higher (see below for discussion of exceptions for students holding an associate or bachelor degree).

• Grades of P, S, and CR earned in credit-bearing courses are normally not accepted. However, this policy may be relaxed for students transferring in credit during pandemic-impacted semesters.

• Grades earned at other institutions are not included in the calculation of a student’s Keuka College grade-point-average (GPA). Work in all Keuka courses will be included in the calculation of a student’s Keuka grade point average. Note: Only Keuka college-level course work is used in calculating degrees with distinction.

• Transfer credits for courses taken more than five years prior to a student’s enrollment will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Because the rate of change in some areas of knowledge is so great, relatively outdated course work may no longer provide the necessary background to begin more advanced study and may hinder a student’s success and professional preparation. A student may therefore have to repeat some courses at the discretion of the division and appropriate faculty and administrators.

• Each transfer student must complete all prerequisite courses needed for the major sought and, as specified, earn the appropriate minimum grade in each course. If, as part of the guaranteed 60 credits given to AA/AS/AAS holders, a student received credit with a grade of less than “C” in prerequisite course for which the major required at least a grade of “C,” the student would have to repeat the course to meet the prerequisite. Please note that if a student has taken the same course multiple times at a single institution, they will only receive credit once as long as the attempt reaches the minimum grade requirement for transfer.

• Credit from foreign institutions require an equivalency evaluation by a reputable evaluation service such as World Education Service (WES) or Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE).

• Matriculated students who wish to take courses at another institution must obtain prior approval to do so. 

Students Holding Associate's Degrees

Transfer students from two-year colleges who have earned an A.A. or A.S. degree are ordinarily granted a minimum of the credits required for the Associate’s degree. Students who have earned an A.A. or A.S. degree can have credits granted for grades of C- and D from the institution that awarded the degree. If a student is transferring credit from multiple institutions and has an A.A. or A.S. degree, C- and D grades will only be accepted from the institution that awarded the degree. Transfer courses that are prerequisites or major requirements, and require a specific minimum grade, will only be accepted if the minimum grade has been met. Students who do not meet the minimum grade requirement will have to repeat the course to meet the prerequisite.

Student's Holding Bachelor's Degrees

Students entering Keuka College with a previously earned B.A. or B.S. degree from other accredited institutions are not required to complete the general education curriculum. If a student has a B.A. degree, up to 90 liberal arts credits may be granted. If a student has a B.S. degree, up to 60 liberal arts credits may be granted. Students may be required to make up major prerequisites and/or a lab science course which is required for graduation. Students must also complete 30 of their last 36 credits at Keuka College (including one Field Period®) and at least 12 credits in the major at the 300-level or above. For students holding a B.A. or B.S. degree, one-to-one credit transfers are not typically conducted through the admissions process. However, if the student believes they have completed a specific major or prerequisite requirement through their past studies, they may ask to have the credit evaluated by the chair of their division. The maximum number of transferable credits is 90.

Transfer General Education Requirements

General education provides a strong foundation for advanced study and pre-professional development in every academic major. Keuka College recognizes that transfer students often present widely differing backgrounds in general education depending on their previous program of study. Many have had classes in arts and sciences disciplines not represented in Keuka’s curriculum.

Students admitted as transfer students are not required to complete exactly the same core requirements as entering freshmen. Instead, the College allows them to demonstrate a similar breadth of knowledge and experience in the arts and sciences by completing course work in three broad categories defined in the General Education Requirements for Transfer Students.  Keuka’s flexible approach acknowledges the general education knowledge and skills transfer students bring with them through prior post-secondary course work.

The Mathematics Placement Examination is required for transfer students (excluding Adult and Online Education and in-country international students) who do not have transfer credit for a course meeting Keuka College’s Quantitative Reasoning requirement.  In addition, any student who does not have transfer credit for a course serving as a prerequisite to a mathematics course required for the student’s major must take the Mathematics Placement Exam.

Field Periods®

College policy requires students to complete one Field Period® for every 30 Keuka College credits. Students with an A.A. or A.S. degree will therefore normally be required to complete two Field Periods®. The number of Field Periods® required for transfer students will be made on a case-by-case basis by the registrar, based on the number of credits accepted and applied toward the baccalaureate degree. Keuka College does not accept courses taken elsewhere as transfer credit towards Field Period® requirements.
