DL-215 Data Formats and Management

The use of data in the decision-making process has become more relevant with improvements in
information technology. The course begins with a general introduction to the field of data
science. The purpose of this course is to introduce the student to sources of data, data
types and file structures, relational data models, the SQL language, and the importance of
"tidy" data. The student will be introduced to basic commands for the SQL language and the R
programming language. The student will use R to create "tidy" data (focusing on the areas of
loading, cleaning and transforming data). The student will learn to interact with relational
databases through the use of MySQL (one of the most popular database systems). Included will be
a brief introduction of "big data".
