Employment Status and Records

Classifications

Employees of Keuka College are employed based on the position classifications, statuses, employment types, and FLSA classifications below, in order to meet staffing and business requirements and accommodate employee needs and schedule preferences. Employees should refer to written benefit policies and plan documents to determine the employee benefits for which they are eligible based on their position classification, status, employment type, FLSA classification and length of service.

This is a Keuka College designation for all positions whose primary responsibility is the direct instruction of students. Faculty members are employed on a contractual basis. See Faculty Handbook for additional information about the “Ranked Faculty” designation.

This classification includes supervisors whose managerial duties do not represent the majority of their time or effort. Professional Staff employees are hired (for the majority of time) on an annual salary basis (however, may be hired on an hourly basis if the position fits the requirements).

In order to determine eligibility for overtime, minimum wage and certain employee benefits, the College classifies its employees as follows:

  • Full-Time Regular Employees – Employees who are regularly scheduled to work at least 30hours per week and who are not classified as seasonal or temporary.
  • Part-Time Regular Employees – Employees hired to work over 20 & less than 30 hours per week on a regular basis (although such employees may be required to work more than 30 hours in certain weeks).
  • Limited Part-Time Employees – Employees who have a regular work schedule that includes 20 or fewer hours per week.
  • Variable Hour Employees – Employees who do not have regular work schedules. This may include, temporary, seasonal, per diem, adjunct instructors, and student workers.

You will be classified as “exempt” or “nonexempt” for the purpose of overtime and minimum wage payments.

Exempt employees – Exempt employees will generally be paid on a salary basis which is intended to pay for all hours worked during each work week, regardless of the employee’s actual hours worked or schedule. Exempt employees are not eligible for overtime pay.

Non-Exempt employees – Non-exempt employees are eligible for minimum wage and overtime as set forth by federal and/or state wage and hour laws. Non-exempt employees are entitled to overtime premium pay at a rate of one and one-half times their regular rate for all hours worked in excess of 40 per workweek.

You will be informed of your initial employment classification during the initial hiring process.  If you change positions during your employment as a result of promotion, transfer, or otherwise, the College will inform you if a status change is applicable.

If you have any questions regarding your employment classification or if you believe that you are incorrectly classified, please contact your immediate supervisor, Department and/or Division Head, and/or The Office of Human Resources.
