Public Area Responsibility
Public areas are defined as those areas of the residence hall not assigned to an individual. This refers to study and social lounges, bathrooms, corridors, pantries, lobby and laundry areas, computer rooms, stairwells, and elevators–those areas open to everyone in a floor section or in a hall or apartment.
Individuals who cause damage are expected to take responsibility for their actions. Those directly responsible for damage bear the burden of paying for the damage rather than having a particular floor section or residence hall pay for such damages. Only when the responsible person is not identified are students living in the affected area charged for such damages. Although the staff makes every effort to find the responsible person(s), it is expected that students will assist in identifying these people. Prorated hall and/or floor charges are only made when, after a reasonable time period, those responsible for the damage are not found. Students who fail to report damage and who are later shown to be responsible for that damage will be referred for disciplinary action. The prorate damage policy is one that stresses student responsibility. The benefits of such a policy are: if damage occurs, the persons actually responsible for the damages pay for it; there is an increase in student responsibility and student self-discipline; and a strong feeling of community responsibility for common living areas develops.
Common Use Bathrooms & Showers
- It is the responsibility of the student to clean up after themselves after using the bathroom, shower, or sink in a communal and private bathroom.
- All bathrooms and shower rooms are cleaned by Finger Lakes Premier Properties (FLPP) regularly, except for the private bathrooms and showers in Harrington Hall, Keuka Park Apartments, and Strong Apartments.
Door Propping
- You are allowed to prop your room door, if you are present in your room. Once you leave your room, you must unprop your door for fire safety compliance.
- Exterior, hallway, and stairwell doors may not be propped open at any time.
Garbage & Sustainability
- Please follow advertised and published signage for proper disposal of trash and recycling in the residence hall and apartment trash rooms or exterior dumpsters.
- Additional dumpsters will be brought onto campus at the end of the Spring semester/academic year for campus closure. Please use those dumpsters as you move out of your residence hall or apartment.
Kitchens
- It is the responsibility of the student to clean up after themselves after using the lounge or pantry kitchen.
- If dirty dishes are present for more than 24 hours, the Offices of Facilities and Residence Life reserve the right to dispose of them.
- If you are using the oven or stove top, you must remain present in the kitchen and observant at all times. If the oven or stove top are left unattended, the Offices of Campus Safety and Residence Life reserve the right to turn off the oven or stove top and/or dispose of unattended food during the course of campus rounds.
Laundry Room
- It is the responsibility of the student to clean up after themselves after using the washers and dryers.
- If clothes are present for more than 15 minutes in a washer or dryer, the clothes may be removed from the unit and placed somewhere in the laundry room. If those clothes remain in the laundry for more than 4 days, the Offices of Facilities and Residence Life reserve the right to dispose of or donate locally.
Lounge Areas
- Lounge Furniture Policy
- College furnishings in lounges and other public spaces are for the benefit and use of all students. Students who remove College property from lounges will be subject to further disciplinary action.
- Lounge furniture includes, but is not limited to:
- Armchair(s)
- Chair(s)
- Desk(s)
- Lighting
- Sofa(s) or couch(es)
- Table(s)
- Coffee table(s)
- Computer table(s)
- End table(s)
- Kitchen table(s)
- Lounge furniture is not allowed to be misused or moved from the common area. If lounge furniture is damaged or found in a residence hall room or apartment, the resident(s) will be documented and subject to disciplinary action.
- Lounge Technology Policy
- Lounge technology includes, but is not limited to:
- Computer(s)
- Computer Cord(s)
- Computer Keyboard(s)
- Computer Monitor(s)
- Computer Mouse(s)
- DVD & Blu-ray Player(s)
- HDMI Cord(s)
- Sound Bar(s)
- Television(s)
- Television Remote(s) & Batteries
- Lounge technology is not allowed to be misused or moved from the common area. If lounge technology is damaged or found in a residence hall room or apartment, the resident(s) will be documented and subject to disciplinary action.
- Security Camera(s)
- The Offices of Campus Safety, Facilities, Residence Life, and Information Technology reserve the right to install security cameras in public areas across campus and use subsequent footage for student conduct purposes.
