Student Handbook 2022-2023

Student Rights and Responsibilities

Speech/Expression/Press

Students have the right to express themselves freely on any subject—provided they do so in a manner that does not violate the Keuka College Student Code of Community Standards. Students, in turn, have the responsibility to respect the rights of all members of the College to exercise these freedoms.

Non-Discrimination

Students have the right to be free from discrimination by any agent or organization of Keuka College for reasons including, but not limited to: age, ethnic or national origin, gender, physical, mental, or emotional disability, marital status, political or social affiliation, race, religion, sexual preference, or sexual orientation.

Acts found to be discriminatory or bias-related such as racial slurs, hate speech, threatening behavior, or other hateful actions, will be adjudicated according to the student conduct process and if found responsible, sanctions appropriate to the violation will be assigned.

Assembly/Protest

Students have the right to assemble in an orderly manner and engage in peaceful protest, demonstration, and picketing. Students have the responsibility not to disrupt the academic mission of the College, threaten the health or safety of any person, or violate the Student Code of Community Standards. The Campus Demonstration Policy can be found here.

Religion/Association

Students have the right to exercise their religious convictions and associate with religious, political, or other organizations of their choice in College facilities designated for such purposes provided they do so in a manner that respects the rights of other members of the community and complies with the Student Code of Community Standards. Students have the responsibility to respect the rights of other members of the College community to free exercise of their religious convictions and to free association with organizations of their choice.

Privacy/Search/Seizure

Students have the right of privacy and to be free from unreasonable searches or unlawful arrest on College property and within their campus residences. Searches will be conducted by the Office of Campus Safety only with the authorization from the President of the College or their designee. Students have the responsibility to respect the privacy of other members of the College community in their person, place of residence, and in College facilities.

Academic Pursuits

Students have the right to accurate and plainly stated information relating to maintenance of acceptable academic standing, graduation requirements, and individual course objectives and requirements. Students can expect instruction from designated instructors at appointed class times and reasonable access to those instructors. Students have the responsibility to attend class and know their appropriate academic requirements.

Quality Environment

Students have the right to expect a teaching, learning, and living environment supportive of the College’s mission and their own educational goals. Students have the responsibility to protect themselves from hazards to the extent that reasonable behavior and precaution can avoid risk.

Governance/Participation

Students have the right to establish representative governmental bodies and to participate in College governance in accordance with the rules and regulations of the College. Students who accept representative roles in the governance of the College have the obligation to participate responsibly.

Due Process

Students have the right to due process before formal disciplinary sanctions are imposed by the College for violations of the Student Code of Community Standards. Students have the right to written notice and the opportunity for a hearing before any change in status is incurred for disciplinary reasons unless a significant threat to persons or property exists. Students have an absolute right to appeal the decisions of any administrative body to the next level of authority, as specified in the Student Code of Community Standards’ policy process and procedures.

Confidentiality

Students have the right to access, and to control access to, their educational records as provided in the federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), also known as the Buckley Amendment. These include the rights to view and challenge the content of specified records, to control the release of personal and academic information to third parties, and to suppress all or some information categorized as “directory information” by legislation.

With a student’s written consent, Keuka College or its designee may disclose any confidential information on file to any individual or agency named by the student. If you want to complete such a waiver, you can do so through the Registrar’s portal page.

Photo Release Policy:

As part of the application for admission to Keuka College, students sign a waiver granting the College permission to use students’ names and photographs in literature and for public relations purposes. Students who would like to rescind this waiver should contact the Office of Marketing and Communications at (315) 279-5231.
