ENG-220 Reading the World

This course is about reading. It is not just about reading to comprehend. It is about interpretation, analysis, and the use of material, visual, and digital texts. How do art, architecture, clothing, media, and music influence what we do, believe, and think? How do history and culture shape what we see and read? How do we use culture and ideology to persuade others to change their minds or take action? This course introduces and puts into practice the fundamentals of rhetorical theory and analysis. Emphasis is placed on applying critical and rhetorical perspectives to contemporary contexts and artifacts—art, music, film and television, digital and social media.
