Policy on Academic Standing

1. Policy on Academic Standing for Undergraduate Students

While processes and procedures vary by major/program, this policy outlines the components of academic standing and academic progress that apply to all Keuka College students. Academic standing is defined as a matriculated student's progress toward completion of the requirements for a degree from Keuka College. A student's continued enrollment and eligibility for financial aid at Keuka College depends on making Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP). Evaluation of academic progress at Keuka College is based on--at minimum--the following:

1. The cumulative credits earned
2. The cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA)
3. The number of Field Periods (FP) completed (for majors/programs that require FP)

Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) is defined as meeting the standards below without failing any repeated required course.

A. Requirements for Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) for Full Time Undergraduate Students

1. Minimum cumulative credits: Matriculated students must earn credits toward degree completion. Minimum credits for on-campus students are described in the table below. Students in the division of Adult and Online Education (AOE) must earn credits consistent with program requirements.
2. Cumulative GPA: Following the end of the first semester at Keuka College, all first time freshmen students must have a cumulative GPA of 1.75 or higher. Following the end of the first semester at Keuka College, all transfer students must have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher. All students must have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher at the end of each subsequent semester or term.
3. Completion of Field Periods: Students in majors/programs requiring FP must successfully complete at least one FP (defined as 3.0 credits of FP experience) by the completion of 30 Keuka College credits, at least two FP by the completion of 60 Keuka College credits, at least three FP by the completion of 90 Keuka College credits, and four FP by the completion of 120 Keuka College credits. According to college policy, the number of Field Periods® required for transfer students will be determined on a case-by-case basis by the Registrar. In some cases, this could affect SAP FP completion requirements for transfer students. AOE students are expected to complete their experiential learning component as determined by their program.

This definition of SAP applies to students’ academic standing within the institution. Some academic majors/programs have additional requirements for academic progress within the major/program. Please see the appropriate section of the Keuka College Record for major/program-specific requirements. The table below summarizes the required credits and cumulative GPA by semester.

Table Notes:
1.  “Semester(s) Completed” includes only Fall and Spring semesters.

Students attending half-time (6, 7, or 8 credit hours) are expected to meet 50 percent of the above standards for minimum credits earned. Students attending three-quarters time (9, 10, or 11 credit hours) are expected to meet 75 percent of the above standards for minimum credits earned.
3.  Cumulative GPA is calculated as described in the Grading System Policy. This table applies to undergraduate students. Graduate students must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and meet all other requirements, as determined by their program, throughout their program of study.

4. Students participating in programs through International Partner Schools are to follow any academic standing guidelines and/or criteria as required by the host institution.
