College Record 2020-2021

Information Moderation and Risk Management

Information technologies, the internet and the world wide web have been the source disciplines of hundreds of millions of new employment opportunities for almost half a century.  From physics to engineering to computer science, training has “moved up the stack” from physical sciences to communication to digital literacy to ethics to address the legal, social, and market aspects of user experience on the internet.  For example, Information security and risk management, content moderation, and digital communications have produced more employment positions in the last five years than currently there are people with sufficient education and training to fill them.

The Information Moderation and Risk Management Program is designed to provide students with the education and training for employment in new and continuously-emerging areas that focus on digital information and its applications in internet commerce, content, and communications. Drawing on existing academic strengths of Keuka College in liberal arts and communications, the Content Moderation and Risk Management Program will support students who seek positions in a wide array of “Silicon Valley” corporations.  Facebook, for example, last year hired over 40,000 new employees to work on mediation between technical algorithms and human consumption of internet content. Any company that holds information in a digital form or transmits it on the internet requires employees with at least a rudimentary knowledge of information security and privacy. Akin to information security are the corporate needs of risk management in the evaluation of corporate digital assets.

The first three courses in this program are pre-existing courses that develop students' abilities to communicate, interpret, and analyze information and data in a mediated or digital realm.  The next three courses are more in-depth and specialized courses developed specifically for this minor that will ground students’ understanding of internet law and policy, internet security, and information and risk management.  These three courses will help students understand the physical, technical, and application layers of information security and develop information risk management strategies.
