The M.S. in Literacy (B-6 or 5-12)

The Master of Science program will lead to recommendation for initial certification in literacy, birth through grade 6 (B-6) or grades 5-12. The curriculum is based on three central and integrated themes—research, application of research-based best practices, and reflection on the efficacy of instructional practice and teacher decision-making.

This program is for teachers who have successfully completed a teacher certification program, or who hold current New York state provisional/initial certification in early childhood, childhood education, or adolescent education. It is designed to enhance teachers’ knowledge about contemporary theories and research- based practices in literacy. The expectation is that they become effective practitioners who understand and deliver high quality literacy instruction and offer proactive literacy leadership in B-6 or 5-12 educational settings.

A distinct feature of this program is its cohort model, meaning that students proceed through the nine courses in a set pattern, with the same group (cohort). In this way, students develop a strong working relationship with each other, have a support system, and create a network of professional peers across the region.

In addition to New York state teaching certification, applicants must have earned a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, with a minimum cumulative 3.0 G.P.A., and at least a 3.0 G.P.A. in the major field of study. For more information, please contact the Division of Education.

Upon successful completion of all program requirements, students will be recommended by the college to NYSED for certification.  Students must apply for New York State certification through NYSED.gov.
