EDU-275 Early Language and Literacy

This course focuses on language and literacy in early childhood, birth through second grade. The emphasis is on supporting learning across this span of development in different naturalistic and instructional settings. To that end, learning theories, development, and appropriate instructional strategies for the acquisition of communicative skills, emergent literacy, and beginning reading and writing are emphasized. The New York State Early Learning Guidelines and Common Core English Language Arts standards provide the framework for instruction within a balanced, thematic approach. The course also includes a 5-hour field experience in an early childhood setting.
