ENG-220 Ways of Reading

A course in ways of reading, analyzing, and interpreting literary texts. Practice of close, careful reading, literary analysis and interpretation, and reading in cultural and historical contexts. Exploration of questions such as "why do we read?" and "how do we find meaning in what we read?" Review and application of basic tools and terms of literary study and an introduction to a range of representative critical perspectives. Substantial practice in writing essays of literary analysis and interpretation that demonstrate effective close reading of texts and an understanding of texts in their cultural and historical contexts.
