CHM-206 Organic Chemistry I

Principles of covalent bonding as they apply to aliphatic and aromatic systems, including Lewis structures, molecular geometry, and bond polarity. Analytical techniques such as ultraviolet and infrared spectroscopy are used to investigate structure. Major emphasis is placed on the knowledge of nomenclature and functional group chemistry. An introduction to reaction mechanisms and stereochemistry is provided. Laboratory work stresses functional groups, separation techniques, and qualitative analysis. Lecture and laboratory.
