Transfer Credit Evaluation Process and Policies

Transfer credits are accepted from regionally accredited post-secondary U.S. institutions. Credit from foreign institutions require students to obtain an evaluation (WES or ECE), proprietary colleges, and other sources are evaluated and accepted on a case-by-case basis. Normally, credit is accepted only for those courses that are completed with a grade of C or higher. Grades of P, S, and CR earned in credit-bearing courses are normally not accepted (see below for discussion of exceptions for students holding associate degrees). Grades earned at other institutions are not included in the calculation of a student’s Keuka College grade-point-average (GPA). Note: All Keuka college-level course work is used in calculating degrees with distinction. Please refer to that section of the Keuka College Record.

Transfer credit equivalencies can be viewed accessing the Collegesource TES link. Once official transcripts are received and equivalencies are recorded on the student's record, transfer students can access the Keuka College portal to review their program evaluation that displays accepted courses, the Keuka College course equivalencies, and estimated total number of credits needed to complete their degree requirements. All transfer students follow the academic policy that pertain to the class level in which (s)he has been placed.

The number of credits accepted toward matriculation and the number of credits a transfer student will need to complete all graduation requirements varies depending on a student’s curriculum at his or her previous institution(s) and the major program the student selects at Keuka College.

Transfer credits for courses taken more than five years prior to a student’s enrollment will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Because the rate of change in some areas of knowledge is so great, relatively outdated course work may no longer provide the necessary background to begin more advanced study and may hinder a student’s success and professional preparation. A student may therefore have to repeat some courses at the discretion of the division and appropriate faculty and administrators.

Each transfer student must complete all prerequisite courses in his/her Keuka College major and, as specified, earn the appropriate minimum grade in each course. In cases in which a student repeats a course at Keuka College in order to earn the minimum grade in a prerequisite course, the College does not grant duplicate credit for repeated coursework. However, the grade for the repeated course will be calculated into the student’s cumulative Keuka College GPA. The same policy applies in cases in which the College requires a student to repeat a class taken elsewhere because the material covered in the original course is considered irrelevant.

*Category includes non-college credit course work approved by ACE of PONSI, advanced placement tests such as CLEP, International Baccalaureate, or AP exams, and Keuka College challenge/exemption exams. Additional credit is evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Students Holding B.A. and B.S. Degrees

Students entering Keuka College with a previously earned B.A. or B.S. degree from other accredited institutions are not required to complete the general education curriculum. They may be required, however, to make up any major prerequisites. They must also complete 30 of their last 36 credits at Keuka College (including one Field Period^®) and at least 12 credits in the major at the 300 level or above. The maximum number of transferable credits is 90.

Students Holding Associate Degrees

Transfer students from two-year colleges who have earned an A.A. or A.S. degree are ordinarily granted at least 60 credits. Students who have earned an A.A. or A.S. degree can have credits granted for grades of C- and D.

Associate Degree Transfer Articulation Agreements

To encourage and facilitate the transfer of qualified students from regional community colleges, Keuka College maintains comprehensive, generic transfer articulation agreements with Broome Community College, Cayuga Community College, Corning Community College, Erie Community College, Finger Lakes Community College, Genesee Community College, Monroe Community College, and Onondaga Community College. All articulated course equivalencies are maintained and accessed using the Collegesource TES link.

Transfer General Education Requirements

General education provides a strong foundation for advanced study and pre-professional development in any academic major. Keuka College recognizes that transfer students often present widely differing backgrounds in general education depending on their previous program of study. Many have had classes in arts and sciences disciplines not represented in Keuka’s curriculum.

Therefore, transfer students who have earned 25 or more credits are not required to complete exactly the same core requirements as entering freshmen. Instead, the College allows them to demonstrate a similar breadth of knowledge and experience in the arts and sciences by completing course work in three broad categories, as detailed below. (The list of acceptable academic disciplines under each category is representative, not comprehensive.) Keuka’s flexible approach acknowledges the general education knowledge and skills transfer students bring with them through prior post-secondary course work.

Students with 24 or fewer credits are required to complete the same General Education requirements as students who started their academic career at Keuka College. All transfer students are required to complete INS 301 at Keuka College.

Field Periods^®

College policy requires students to complete one Field Period^® for every two semesters at Keuka. Students with an A.A. or A.S. degree will therefore normally be required to complete two Field Periods^®. The number of Field Periods^® required for transfer students will be made on a case-by-case basis by the registrar, based on the number of credits accepted and applied toward the baccalaureate degree.
