College Record 2016-2017

Credit

Degree requirements are stated in terms of semester credit hours.
The proportion of classroom, laboratory, and study time will vary from course to course.

Quarter-term credits are transferred from other accredited colleges to Keuka College and are translated into semester credit hours as follows: quarter credit hour multiplied by .67 equals semester credit hour.

Credit by Examination

Under certain conditions, Keuka College grants credit toward graduation based on the following exams:

  • College Proficiency Examination (CPE) administered by the New York State Department of Education.
  • College Level Examinations Program (CLEP) offered by the College Board.
  • Advanced Placement Program of the College Entrance Examination Board (CEEB).
  • New York State Regents College Examination (RCE).
  • International Baccalaureate Examinations (IB).

Credit is granted to students who meet the entrance requirements and who matriculate in a program leading to a degree. The granting of credit does not necessarily guarantee that all prerequisites for advanced study have been met. Students who have completed work in lower-level courses by examination are urged to consult with a departmental adviser before registering for advanced work in a subject.

A matriculated student may be eligible to earn credits through any of the above-mentioned examinations upon approval of the registrar. Further information is available from the registrar’s office.

Transfer Credits

Course work transferred from another accredited institution by a Keuka College student is by credit only. Credit is only given for courses with a grade of C or higher (a C- does not transfer, a C does transfer).  Grades do not transfer.  A transfer student’s GPA is computed based only on credits earned at Keuka College. The number of credits completed toward a degree includes credits accepted by transfer.

Students who have twice failed a Keuka College course cannot take an equivalent course at another institution and transfer the credit. (The only way to fulfill the requirement and remove the F is to repeat the course at Keuka College.)

Enrolled students must follow the procedures listed on the Keuka College website for approval of non-Keuka course work.

Transfer Articulation Agreements

To encourage and facilitate the transfer of qualified students from regional community colleges, Keuka College maintains transfer articulation agreements with the institutions listed below with the equivalent courses displayed accessing Keuka's Collegesource TES website.

Broome Community College

Cayuga County Community College

Corning Community College

Erie Community College

Finger Lakes Community College

Genesee Community College

Herkimer County Community College

Jamestown Community College

Jefferson Community College

Students interested in transferring to Keuka College should consult with their academic adviser and an Admissions or ASAP transfer counselor as early as possible for help and information. Effective planning maximizes the number of credits a student will be able to transfer and apply toward graduation requirements at Keuka College.

Repeating a Course

A course may be repeated only once. The grade and credit from the repeated course become the official grade and credit. The earlier course grade does appear on the student’s transcript, but is not computed in the GPA or Keuka College credit hours earned toward academic standing or graduation.

Independent Study

An Independent Study is designed to give the student with adequate qualifications an opportunity to undertake a self-directed study of a particular topic or subject not regularly offered by the College, under the guidance of a sponsoring faculty member. The title of the Independent Study will be included on the student’s permanent academic record. The student may not register for more than one Independent Study during one semester. Registration for an Independent Study must be completed by the fifth day of the semester in which it is to take place. The student will be assessed a fee for each Independent Study.

Individualized Instruction

Individualized Instruction is defined as instruction of a course that is part of the standing Keuka College curriculum as listed in the Keuka College Record. It may be granted at a professor’s discretion: (1) if the course is not being offered that academic year; (2) if for significant non-academic reasons the student withdrew from the course when it was previously offered; (3) if the course was cancelled; or (4) if the course lends itself to an individualized, less traditional classroom format. Procedures for arranging Individualized Instruction are available in the registrar’s office and the website. Registration for Individualized Instruction must be completed by the fifth day of the semester in which it is to take place.

To minimize the need for Individualized Instruction, students should work carefully with their academic adviser in planning their course schedules each semester to fulfill all General Education and major requirements when the required classes are regularly scheduled. The student will be assessed a fee for each Individualized Instruction.
